Permanent Hemodialysis Catheter

The Permanent Hemodialysis Catheter is a double-lumen catheter designed to provide a stable blood access during hemodialysis. Its basic functions include two main aspects: draining blood and returning blood.

1. The process of draining blood

During hemodialysis, one end of the catheter (usually called the drainage lumen) is inserted into the patient's large vein, such as the internal jugular vein, subclavian vein, or femoral vein. This drainage lumen is responsible for extracting blood from the patient's body. The specific steps are as follows:

• Catheter insertion: The catheter is placed into the patient's large vein through surgery or catheterization technology, ensuring that the end of the catheter is in the right position for efficient blood extraction.
• Blood drainage: The dialysis machine drains the patient's blood through the drainage lumen. The drainage lumen is usually large and designed to quickly extract a large amount of blood to ensure that the dialysis machine has an adequate blood supply.
• Prevention of clotting: In order to prevent blood from clotting in the catheter, anticoagulants such as heparin are often used during the drainage process.

2. Blood reinfusion process

After the drained blood is processed by the dialysis machine, it needs to be returned to the patient through the other end of the catheter (usually called the reinfusion chamber). The design of this reinfusion chamber is equally important to ensure that the purified blood is smoothly reinfused. The specific steps are as follows:

• Blood purification: The blood is filtered and purified through the semipermeable membrane in the dialysis machine to remove metabolic waste and excess fluid, while adjusting the electrolyte balance.
• Blood reinfusion: The purified blood is returned to the patient through the reinfusion chamber. The reinfusion chamber is designed to be smooth and fluent to avoid turbulence or bubbles in the blood during the reinfusion process.
• Pressure monitoring: The dialysis machine will monitor the blood pressure and flow during the reinfusion process to ensure smooth and safe blood reinfusion.
