Structural Composition
Suction Catheter Body: It is usually made of soft and tough medical-grade materials, such as silicone or polyvinyl chloride. The catheter body comes in various diameters to adapt to the airway conditions of different patients and the needs of sputum suction. Its length is designed to meet the requirement of inserting to an appropriate depth in the airway through an endotracheal tube or a tracheostomy tube for sputum suction operations.
Connector: One end is used to connect to an endotracheal tube, a tracheostomy tube, or other artificial airway devices to ensure a tight connection and prevent air leakage. The other end is connected to the suction device, and common connection methods include standard interfaces, which are convenient for connecting to devices such as suction machines.
Protective Sheath: This is an important part of the closed suction catheter. It is a transparent or semi-transparent plastic sleeve that wraps the suction catheter body. One end of the protective sheath is closely connected to the connector, and the other end has an openable and closable port. It remains closed when sputum suction is not in progress to maintain a closed environment of the airway.
Operation Port: There is an operation port on the protective sheath, usually equipped with a sealing cap or a valve. Medical staff can insert the suction catheter into the airway through this port for sputum suction without breaking the airtightness of the airway, and close the port after the operation is completed to prevent outside air and pollutants from entering the airway.
Irrigation Channel (Some Have): Some advanced closed suction catheters are also equipped with an irrigation channel. Irrigation fluids such as normal saline can be injected through this channel to flush the airway and the suction catheter, to remove sputum and prevent blockage, and at the same time keep the airway moist.
