CPAP Mask is a key medical device for treating sleep breathing disorders such as sleep apnea syndrome. The following is a detailed introduction to it:
Working Principle
Connected to a CPAP machine, the CPAP Mask provides a continuous positive air pressure during the patient's sleep, creating a certain pressure in the airway. This prevents the airway from collapsing, keeps the airway unobstructed, helps the patient breathe normally and improves the quality of sleep.
Types
Nasal Mask: Covers only the nose and is suitable for patients who breathe through their noses most of the time and do not breathe through their mouths during sleep. It has the advantages of being relatively compact, having a small facial coverage area, a relatively wide field of vision and high comfort, such as ResMed AirFit N30i.
Nasal Pillow Mask: Uses inflatable nasal pillows inserted into the nostrils for sealing and delivers air to the nasal cavity. It is the most simple type of CPAP mask. It is suitable for patients who prefer a low-profile, lightweight feel, exerts less pressure on the skin and is less likely to cause indentations, such as ResMed AirFit P10 and ResMed AirFit P30i.
Full Face Mask: Covers both the nose and the mouth and is suitable for patients who breathe through their mouths during sleep or those for whom nasal masks are not effective. It ensures that the patient receives sufficient positive pressure air flow whether breathing through the nose or the mouth, such as ResMed AirFit F20 and Philips Respironics DreamWear Full Face Mask.
Selection Methods
Consider Sleeping Habits: If you are a side sleeper or a prone sleeper, you need to choose a mask that can maintain a good seal and comfort in these positions. For example, a nasal mask or a nasal pillow mask may be more suitable; while back sleepers have a relatively wider range of choices.
Consider Facial Features: For patients with a lot of facial hair, a nasal pillow mask or some specially designed full face masks may be more suitable to reduce air leakage caused by hair; patients with a small or large face should choose a mask of the right size to ensure a good seal.
Consider Breathing Patterns: Patients who mainly breathe through their noses can give priority to nasal masks or nasal pillow masks; while patients who often breathe through their mouths need to choose full face masks to ensure the treatment effect.
Use and Maintenance
Wearing Method: First, clean the face to remove oil and dirt to ensure that the mask can fit well. Then adjust the mask headband to make it moderately tight. Generally, it should be able to insert 1-2 fingers. Gently place the mask on the nose or over the nose and mouth, and gradually adjust the position to ensure a good seal and no obvious air leakage.
Cleaning Method: Clean the mask regularly, at least once a week. Remove all parts of the mask, wash them in warm water with mild detergent, then rinse them thoroughly with clean water and let them dry naturally in a clean place.
Replacement Cycle: The service life of the mask varies depending on factors such as frequency of use and degree of cleanliness. Generally, it is recommended to replace the mask every 3-6 months to ensure its performance and hygiene.
