Nasal Oxygen Cannula is a common medical device used to deliver oxygen to patients. The following is a detailed introduction about it:

Structure

Nasal Prongs: Usually made of soft plastic or silicone materials, they are shaped like small flared or conical structures. Designed to conform to the physiological structure of the human nasal cavity, they can be comfortably inserted into the nostrils to deliver oxygen into the nasal cavity.

Connecting Tube: Generally, it is a flexible and elastic plastic tube used to connect the nasal prongs to the oxygen source. It is responsible for transporting oxygen from the oxygen source to the nasal prongs and then to the patient.

Fixing Device: Common ones include adjustable elastic headbands or earplug-style fixators. The headband can be adjusted according to the size of the patient's head to ensure that the nasal oxygen cannula is stably fixed on the patient's head. The earplug-style fixator fixes the nasal oxygen cannula by inserting the earplug part into the ear.

Principle

The nasal oxygen cannula uses the pressure difference of oxygen to transport oxygen from the oxygen source through the connecting tube to the nasal prongs, and then the nasal prongs directly deliver the oxygen into the patient's nasal cavity. During the patient's breathing process, when inhaling, negative pressure is formed in the nasal cavity, and the oxygen enters the respiratory tract under the action of pressure, mixing with the air and being inhaled into the lungs. In this way, the oxygen content in the inhaled gas is increased to meet the patient's demand for oxygen.

Features

Convenient to Use: The nasal oxygen cannula has a simple structure and is easy to operate. Patients can wear and remove it by themselves without the assistance of professionals.

High Comfort Level: The nasal prongs are usually made of soft materials, which cause little irritation to the nasal mucosa. Patients generally do not feel obvious discomfort during the wearing process.

Suitable for Long-term Use: It is suitable for patients to receive long-term low-flow oxygen therapy, such as patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and other patients who need long-term oxygen inhalation.

Low Cost: Compared with some other oxygen inhalation devices, the nasal oxygen cannula has a relatively low price, and the replacement cost is also not high, which reduces the economic burden on patients.

Clinical Applications

Oxygen Inhalation in General Wards: In general wards, for patients with mild conditions who only need low-flow oxygen inhalation, such as patients with pneumonia, bronchitis, etc., the nasal oxygen cannula is the most commonly used oxygen inhalation tool.

Home Oxygen Therapy: Many patients with chronic diseases need to receive long-term oxygen therapy at home. Due to its advantages of convenient use and low cost, the nasal oxygen cannula becomes the preferred device for home oxygen therapy.

Emergency Transfer: During emergency transfer in an ambulance and other situations, the nasal oxygen cannula can be used as a temporary oxygen inhalation device to provide necessary oxygen support for patients and maintain the patient's oxygen saturation.
